This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

In the grassy field near Birdwatching Dot Com

You could drive with the window down past a pasture full of singing Henslow's sparrows and never notice them. Or hike into the field without realizing that a dozen Henslow's were throwing their heads back and pouring out their hearts in song.

It's a tiny little sound, a whispered tslick, 1/4 of a second long. But if you slow it down on the computer to 1/10th its normal speed, it's a musical melody of 7 notes.
