Haiku Wren House

In the first warm rain,
baby wrens beneath the eaves,
the wren house trembling.

The Haiku Wren House is a Zen poem in wood, seventeen pieces of natural cedar, joined in mitered precision. Here is an elegant abode to invite the happiness of wrens into your garden.

Haiku wrenhouse eyelet It's assembled from the most long-lasting of materials. The body is solid cedar, put together with tongue-and-groove joinery, like fine cabinetry. Concealed stainless steel screws attach the sides to the top and floor. The door hardware is solid brass. The birdhouse hangs from a copper eyelet. Its unique design is reminiscent of an ancient Japanese temple.

The Haiku Wren House is a hanging birdhouse. It suspends gracefully from your eaves, arbor, or tree. Wrens like the arrangement, and it makes for an easy installation.

Natural honey locust thorns secure the large access door, on the back side of the wren house. (An extra thorn is included with each Haiku Wren House.) Honey locust is famous for longevity. A honey locust thorn will probably outlast a nail.

When you slide the thorns out of their brass clasps and remove the access door (using the small finger notch thoughtfully included for the purpose), the birdhouse opens with a sound like wooden wind chimes.

In the interior you will notice how perfectly the eight facets of the roof meet. Generous ventilation spaces near the roof (protected by the overhang) supply fresh air. The floor, which fits neatly into the eight slanted and tapered wall pieces, has drainage holes to keep the nest, eggs, and baby birds dry.

This birdhouse is intelligently designed to fulfill the needs of wrens, so that the birds will succeed in their nesting and return to your garden year after year. The hole is 1-1/4" in diameter -- just right for wrens but too small for starlings and house sparrows.

The Haiku Wren House really does remind one of a haiku, a literary form in Japanese poetry. Its seventeen pieces of wood echo the seventeen syllables of the traditional haiku.

Hanging outside your house, it will welcome a family of wrens to your garden. Its presence will calm and bring joy to the heart. Your wrens will love it.

You will too.
