The Regal Mud Hen

First time I saw one, in California in the 70s, someone told me this bird was a "mud hen." I was surprised later when I found it in my bird book and learned its name actually was American coot.

In a group of birders, no one seems very impressed with coots. But check out its ruby eye. And if you get a close look, notice the red tilaka on its forehead. There is something regal about the unassuming mud hen.
