This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

At an oxbow of Crow Creek, today I saw a Winter Wren. I was looking for it, counting on it.

If I wait patiently there on a day like today, at the gray and frayed end of winter, I'll sometimes see a tiny bird moving at the speed of thought through the tangle of branches churned and knotted together in flood time. A momentary glimpse is all that can be hoped for, and not very close, but the little bird touches me all the same.
