This Morning Outside

I love to watch what the birds are eating, and I was intrigued at this little drum-shaped thing that the Red-bellied Woodpecker pulled out of a dead limb's bark.

I don't know what the woodpecker was eating, but it's something that was hiding in the bark of a dead limb.

Which is why so many birders let dead trees stand, wherever it's safe to do that. A dead tree is a tree of life to the birds.
