Vortex Diamondback Binocular
Review
Best value binocular
"Just tell me the best binocular for the money," our friend Linda asked us. She had just caught the birding fever, and she was enthusiastic.
She'd borrowed a binocular from the local nature center to go on a bird hike, and she knew right away that she needed one of her very own. She wasn't ready to fork over a major chunk of her savings for a high-end binocular, but she wanted something good.
"Is there something like that?"
Turns out there is.
It's the Vortex Diamondback HD — a high-quality binocular, with the best warranty a person could imagine. For around $200, its a binocular that performs more like binoculars in the $400-plus price class.
HD optics
The image is crisp, with good contrast, which makes it easy to see detail. The “HD” in the name refers to glass elements with low dispersion, which means they reduce the scattering of light that occurs when light passes through glass.
Careful design of the curvature and arrangement of the lenses also controls distortion. All of this reduces chromatic aberration and improves edge-to-edge clarity. High-quality coatings and well-engineered lens layout also enhance sharpness and maintain color fidelity.
Field of view
A wide field of view contributes mightily to the success and satisfaction of using binoculars. The wider the field of view, the more completely we are immersed in the visual experience.
With a view that is 393 feet wide at 1000 yards, the Diamondback has a wider field of view than most binoculars in this relatively inexpensive price range. This is one of the surprising qualities of the Diamondback. All of the other binoculars in the chart below cost more than the Diamondback but have a narrower field of view.

This warranty is one of the reasons that schools and youth groups often invest in a class set of Diamondbacks. They're protected if one gets dropped!
We feel very good when we sell a Vortex, because we know that our customer will be taken care of.
Other sizes of Diamondbacks
There is a whole family of Diamondbacks, from quite small to quite large.
If you're not sure which Diamondback to order, you can't go wrong with the 8x42. It's the standard and the sweet spot.
For lighter weight, look at the 8x32 or 8x28.
For maximum brightness in dark conditions, you might consider the 10x50 or 12x50. These, however, are heavier than the 8x42.
If you want more magnification and your hand is very steady, you might want the 10x42.
