The Binocular Advisor
by Michael and Diane Porter
Answers to questions from real people with real questions about how to choose a binocular.
Situation: What is a good, moderately-priced, all-around binocular. I want to use it for birdwatching, sports, and travel.
Advice: An excellent
choice is the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42. This is a very good binocular at a very moderate price.
It's waterproof and has excellent optics. It's been a best seller for years. Birders have voted with the dollars for this binocular. Outstanding value.
If you wear glasses, be sure to get the 8x42 version of the Nikon Monarch, as it has long eye relief and hence works well with glasses. (Read more about eye relief.)
If you don't wear glasses, then you could get the 10x42 version if you really want the maximum magnification. However, most people find the 8x42 easier to use.
