This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

Under the eaves at Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

A very strange insect is the walking stick. It looks like a stick. Acts like a stick. Sometimes it walks. This male was clinging under a soffit at Birdwatching Dot Com. Below is a remarkable image of two walking sticks mating.

The photo below was taken by Brian Stains on farm in Van Buren County, Iowa. It took my eyes about a minute to untangle the two walking stick insects from the plant-based twigs they're on. Photo reproduced with the permission of Brian Stains.
