Already it begins, the assured transition, as the American Goldfinch replaces his winter suit with glorious golden springtime. One by one, bright new feathers erupt from within the skin, pushing out the old, the drab, the worn.

For a while now the goldfinches will be all patches. But the gold will increase, until the whole bird is a shining paragon. You can count on this renewal. It is built into nature.
