This Morning Outside

Seven Black-capped Chickadees perched in the redbud tree this morning, waiting for the morning delivery of sunflower seeds. They're a companionable flock.

Several chickadee pairs share a winter territory. Plus one or more young, not-yet-mated birds. These are floaters, who haven't found a permanent flock yet. If one of the paired birds doesn't make it through the winter, a floater gets a chance to fill the vacancy and become a vested citizen of the community.

This chickadee was with the group but a bit apart. A floater, perhaps.
