This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

At 7:30, I could feel the radiance of the sun right through my old parka. It was 10 degrees, and I stood a couple of feet from the bird feeders.

A Downy Woodpecker hung back, weighing his options. An inch of down kept all but my fingers warm enough in the 10-degree air. However, Downy's down coat was only a centimeter or two thick. He made the most of it by fluffing slightly and hunkering down so his toes stayed inside his envelope of warmth.

A minute or two he studied me, and then he came for the hulled sunflower seeds. Nothing bad happened to him. And then the other birds came too, their noises like a little orchestra tuning up. Life is good.
